Newcastle's Premier League Managers Ranked As Players - Worst To Best

8. Steve Clarke

Newcastle United Manager: 1999 (Caretaker) Position: Full-Back Clubs Played For: St Mirren (1982-87), Chelsea (1987-98) League Appearances (Goals): 530 (14) International Side (Caps/Goals): Scotland (6/0) Honours (As A Player): 1997 FA Cup (Chelsea); 1998 League Cup (Chelsea); 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (Chelsea); 1990 Full Members Cup (Chelsea)
Hardly the most-exciting man during interviews - and arguably the most dour out there - Clarke was an extremely-competent defender who was the stalwart of the Chelsea side during the 1990s having transferred from St Mirren for £422,000 in 1987. A winner of an FA Cup, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge, Clarke was voted into Chelsea's centenary XI at right-back in 2005 - such was his contribution to the club. Remarkably only capped six times by Scotland, Clarke was one the Premier League's standout defenders in the competition's early years and he would just shade the right-back berth in the XI of former Magpies managers.
