Premier League: 10 Biggest Transfer Window Mistakes

9. Fulham Splash Out

Mitroglou joining Fulham is another deal that on paper looks fantastic given his record in Greece, but it isn't as great as it seems, as it raises many potential problems. The Cottagers paid some way more than £10m to bring the Olympiacos striker to Craven Cottage, making his one of the biggest deals of the window, and unlike for neighbours Chelsea and the likes of Manchester City, that amount is vast for a club like Fulham and the situation is extremely different. Fulham aren't flying high in the table, they're not even hovering in the middle - they're bottom, rock bottom, and at this stage their safety and Premier League status is far from secure for next season. To say it's squeaky bum time at Fulham is something of an understatement, and this transfer is a massive, massive risk. There's no doubting that Mitroglou is a superb player, or that the signing is a massive coup for Fulham, but if the worst case scenario does happen and the club drops down a division they will surely lose the player - and it's unlikely they'll get a similar figure to what they paid. Fulham's best hope if they do go down is that the Greek enjoys a wonderful half season at the club and continues in the same fashion for the World Cup.
