Premier League: 10 Summer Transfers That Simply Made No Sense

1. Falcao - Monaco To Man Utd

If there's one area of the Manchester United squad that does not need immediate improvement, it is attack. Swimming with a plethora of talent in the forward line, with the likes of Angel di Maria and Juan Mata servicing the ruthlessly efficient Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, the £6 million loan deal for Falcao certainly took everyone by surprise. The club have been crying out for a midfield enforcer for the last nine years, and judging by the opening weeks of the season, the defence looks ridden with nerves and fragility. There is no denying that the Columbian centre-forward is a world-class striker, and one of the best players in the world, but there were question marks raised when Di Maria was signed last week, such was the necessity for a defensive-minded player. Despite his arsenal of qualities, Falcao's signature looks even more unnecessary. While £6 million looks to be a steal for a player of Falcao's ilk - even if just for a season - reports have suggested that his wages will take the deal skywards of £20 million. With the tempestuous Rooney's nose having been put out of joint in the past by Van Persie's arrival two years ago, it will be interesting to see how the £300k p/wk captain fares as he attempts to muscle his way past two of the most lethal finishers in the game. While the £50 million Monaco superstar may be one of the most potent strikers in world football, it smacks of a signing fashioned purely to appease the fans, rather than to alleviate the team's glaring problems.
