Ranking All NUFC Premier League Goalkeepers - Worst To Best

5. Shaka Hislop - 53 Appearances - 1995 - 1998

Signing from Reading in the summer of 1995, Hislop established himself as our number one during the first-half of the campaign as we built up an impressive 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League and appeared to have a firm grip on the title. So it's no coincidence that during a five-month injury lay-off, beginning in December, we were overtaken by Manchester United before the Trinidad and Tobago international returned to action in April and eventually had to settle for the runners-up prize. It illustrated the importance of Hislop to Kevin Keegan's swashbuckling Entertainers, the 6ft 6in stopper conceded just 13 goals in 16 matches and kept six clean sheets before he was forced off in a loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with the game scoreless at the point of his departure from the field. It was start of a swift decline in his fortunes on Tyneside as he lost the trust of both Keegan and then Kenny Dalglish following an alarming dip in form across his final two seasons with the club. Still, we look back fondly on Hislop's contributions to the most exciting and heartbreaking season in our Premier League existence.
