Sunderland’s 10 Greatest Premier League Loan Signings
1. Fabio Borini
Here it is then, Sunderland’s best Premier League loan signing.
Just thinking about Borini brings a tear to many Sunderland supporting eyes. The passionate Italian left a significant mark in his solitary season on Wearside.
He started rather slowly on Wearside, notching a solitary goal before Christmas. However, following the festive period, Borini came into his own.
He scored in Sunderland’s most crucial games including the winner at Chelsea away, the Capital One Cup Final, in both derby fixtures and played with the sort of passion and endeavour North East fans adore.
There can’t be many players to have achieved all that in a solitary loan spell — it’s just a shame he foolishly returned to Liverpool, believing he’d get regular playing time. As Obi-Wan Kenobi painfully screams in anguish to Anakin in Star Wars, “You were the chosen one!”
The same applies to Borini, he had something at Sunderland that is never likely to be rekindled.
