The Most Expensive Liverpool XI Of All Time

1. ST: Andy Carroll

If you thought it couldn't get any worse, it just has. This is admittedly a contentious pick as both Andy Carroll and Roberto Firmino cost the same, so as Carroll's transfer was the oldest and taking inflation into account, you have to view him as the more expensive.

But how exactly these two players cost the same is beyond belief. Back in January 2011, Liverpool were in a crisis. Star striker Torres had been sold to Chelsea on deadline day and as a result they had vast funds available to panic-buy a replacement. They would end up buying two young strikers, the unknown Suarez and Carroll, who was having scoring goals for fun at Newcastle.

Unfortunately the pony-tailed giant was utterly hopeless. Injuries were the main problem (he was even injured when he signed) but overall was nothing more than a target man and just as Benteke would prove later on, he didn't fit Liverpool's system at all. It also didn't help that he really wasn't that good.

He was moved onto West Ham after just 18 months and continued to be plagued by injury before finally returning to Newcastle last summer on a pay-as-you-play contract.

Aside from some important goals during the club's 2012 FA Cup run, Carroll's Liverpool career was a disaster and he will go down in history as one of the worst transfers in Premier League history.

Let's hope Liverpool do buy Timo Werner, so we can get Carroll out of this XI ASAP.
