The Magpies then went on to become Division One champions and gained promotion to the Premier League. His performances throughout Newcastle's 1993-94 Premier League campaign earned him his first England cap at the age of 30 and he reportedly played well in both of his full international appearances. At the end of the 1994095 season, after 130 appearances for Newcastle, Venison moved to Galatasaray for £750,000 but, after just five months, he signed for Southampton for £850,000 and played 24 times for the Saints and helped them avoid relegation during the 1995-96 season. Persistent back injuries led to Venison retiring at the end of the season, aged 32.
