He was to Spurs what Luis Suarez is to Liverpool. The phrase a one-man team has become something of a pained cliché trotted out by smug journalists whenever a club inevitably suffer in the immediate aftermath of losing their best player, but in the case of Gareth Bale - it looks like Spurs were exactly that. With the flying Welshman rampaging down wings and through the centre during the 12/13 season, his 21 league goals elevated Spurs to within a point of Champions League football, amassing 72 points throughout the season. Last season, the White Hart Lane outfit finished ten points behind the top four and so far this campaign, they have collected just 17 points from 12 games. Bale has, of course, scaled new heights since his world record £85 million move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. While he has inevitably remained in the shadow of the ridiculously talented Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu, he has still added some meaningful contributions, including a sensational winner against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and what proved to be the winning goal against cross-city rivals Athletico Madrid in the Champions League final. There is no way that Bale would return to the comfort zone that he left to realise his dream and further his sizeable ambitions, but he would certainly solve a lot of problems if he did.
