14 Biggest Premier League Transfer Mistakes Of Summer So Far
7. Bacary Sagna - Arsenal To Man City
Bacary Sagna became the latest in a long line of players to jump the good ship Arsenal for Manchester City by moving to Etihad Stadium on a free transfer following the end of his contract with the Gunners. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger pleaded with him to stay and even offered the 31-year-old a new, three-year deal. Instead Sagna became the fifth Arsenal player to make the switch to City in recent years following the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri. And Wenger recently questioned the defender's decision to leave the club where he made his name. The Frenchman said:
"What is tiring is to lose players to City or somebody else. You will have to ask Sagna why he chose City. I made him a proposal to stay for three years, but he chose them. Had he chosen a long time ago? Maybe it looks to me like he agreed it a long time before. It is disappointing because he came here as an unknown and he became a French international. But I also respect Sagna because, until the last day of his contract with us, he was super-professional."
Indeed, Sagna's decision to leave Emirates Stadium looks a strange one. At Arsenal he could have continued as the club's undisputed right-back while at City he will have to compete with Pablo Zabaleta, and the Argentine has made right-back his own at the Etihad recently, meaning the ex-Gunner will likely have to settle for substitute appearances in 2014-15. You also have to wonder why City felt they needed him in the first place.
