7 Players Worthy Of Breaking Newcastle's Transfer Record

2. Wilfried Bony - Swansea City (transfermarkt value: £13.2 million)

Barrington Coombs/EMPICS SportBarrington Coombs/EMPICS SportIt came out in the media just recently that Newcastle rejected the chance to sign Wilfried Bony for £12 million last summer before he joined Swansea, because they believed he wasn't good enough for the Premier League. 16 league goals later, including a brace that gave Swansea a 2-1 victory at St James' Park in April, and the club has been left with egg on its face. Again. An all too familiar feeling. This week, Swansea look set to complete the free transfer signing of long term Newcastle target Bafetimbi Gomis. He looks like a like for like replacement for Bony, given their similar styles of play and the fact that the Ivory Coast international has talked up an exit from the Liberty Stadium recently. Bony has a lot of admirers in the stands at St James' Park, but once again the fee being discussed is north of the transfer record. Given his goal record in a side that struggled last season, Bony has proven himself worthy of a hefty price tag. His superb record at Vitesse Arnhem in Holland should also not be overlooked. Although Bony would want European football, and the likes of Arsenal have been linked, if Newcastle were to see the error of their ways in their judgement of the striker and stump up the cash (lets be honest, incredibly unlikely!) then signing him would be a great move. Despite his goal record, it still remains a ridk to take him to the highest level, so perhaps a move to a club like Newcastle, where he would have to deal with the pressure of playing in front of 52,000 passionate fans every week, would be a good move for him before taking that step. Who knows, if he signed, maybe a challenge would be on the cards for this club?
