To his credit, Pardew has dealt with the rising tide of criticism against him relatively well in the past few weeks (even before we were winning), but he can't resist the odd self-sabotaging moment, like saying he'd polish his Manager Of The Year award while pondering his team's stuttering form. Or blaming the fans repeatedly (or at least being perceived to be). At least he hasn't head butted anyone. His tactical knowledge leaves a lot to be desired, but his October wins and the Liverpool one were all master-minded specifically on tactical response to the opposition. Yes, it's not pretty, but as long as it works, it's hard to complain too much. So far, the manager has failed to show that he has a Plan B - hence the capitulation in the second half of last season - and he does still hang players out to dry, but he is not entirely irredeemable. Backing him blindly would be a mistake, but if he can pick up points against the teams around Newcastle, while still competing against the bigger clubs, then the Magpies will finish in the top 10. If they can go on a bit of a run, and get their more talented players performing and scoring, crucially, they could still break the top 6. But equally, speculation is just as pointless, and judging by the first ten games, it's very much a picture of uncertainty. Not that it matters, since Mike Ashley will back his manager until he can't afford to - and that's a long time away.
