Unlike this campaign, Newcastle had managed to secure their Premier League status in the penultimate game of the 2012-13 season by winning 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers. The Magpies had dropped down the table horribly from the previous season due to a mixture of injuries, loss of form and the burden of the Europa League, and they ended the campaign with a whimper too as they finished in 16th place. Laurent Koscielny's goal gave the Gunners the victory they needed in order to secure a top-four finish.
