The appointment of self-proclaimed fascist Paolo Di Canio at the end of March as Martin O'Neill's successor was met with instant anger. The Black Cat's vice-chairman and non-executive director David Milliband
resigned in protest of his appointment due to the Italian's "past political statements" in which the former Lazio ace heralded fascist dictator Mussolini as "a very principled ethical individual". Sunderland's PR department must have been on holiday when this appointment was made and it is certainly one that will live long in the memory.
