7 Things Rangers Fans Can Expect From Mike Ashley (From All Newcastle Fans)
3. Asset "Purchasing"
This is probably the most controversial theory - and one that will likely upset a lot of Rangers fans, but going on Ashley's business record, it looks like a painful inevitability. Mike Ashley generally identifies business opportunities in crisis brands and businesses: he doesn't ever invest in anything that is healthy, because there's no profit to be had: that is why he's invested in Debenhams at low value, and gambled on Tesco shares, and why he continues to buy smaller sports brands. When you think of his power play for Rangers in that context, it makes sense that he'd get himself in the boardroom, and why he's been negotiating key asset deals - the naming rights, the retail arm - already. And sadly, because the on field assets aren't at all profitable, you have to look elsewhere for where the value to Ashley lies. He's not a saviour in strict terms - if he saves the club then great, it will become profitable eventually - he's actually most likely there to gain control of key assets so that he's the most powerful financial body associated with the club, without ever having to own it outright. More funding will be needed, and don't be surprised if assets are used as leverage to secure further loans or investment: and you'd have to think the stadium would be the big one.
