10 Concerns Man Utd Should Have Ahead Of The New Season

5. The Prolonged Captaincy Vacancy

Nemanja Vidic played his last game for Manchester United on May 11th and in the three months that have passed since then the club have yet to settle on a new captain. With so many leaders leaving the club this summer, such as Ferdinand, Giggs and Evra, Louis van Gaal faces something of a conundrum over who to pick. Frighteningly, Jonny Evans has emerged as a potential candidate recently, but the more obvious choices are Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. But there are issues there as well. Van Persie struggled through an injury-stricken campaign last season and made only 21 appearances while Rooney had yet another disappointing World Cup campaign with England and his confidence levels are on the floor. There's also the issue of Rooney not being very well liked among certain sections of the Red Devil's support. He angered some fans by the way he treated Sir Alex Ferguson last year, by reportedly refusing to play in Ferguson's last ever game in charge of the club against Swansea last May. The pair had a frosty embrace as they prepared to be presented with the Premier League title and it was plain to see there were frictions. Rooney has also twice threatened to quit United and was linked with a move to Chelsea not 12 months ago, with many calling his loyalty into question. Is this the sort of personality Louis van Gaal wants as his captain? It's something only he can decide but he has something of a headache on his hands when it comes to picking Vidic's successor.
