10 Players Who Thought They Were Bigger Than Newcastle United

5. Didier Domi

The strange case of Frenchman Didier Domi is a little more complex than the other players on this list. The devout Muslim came to the club with a big reputation, but the club, for some reason decided initially to move him into a Quayside apartment, which was the beginning of the end. In the end it wasn't so much that Domi thought he was better or bigger than the club, but that he was morally superior to the entire culture of the city, calling fans "godless" to get a move to PSG. In his usually elegant manner, Freddy Shepherd ignored the religious implications of his unhappiness and instead just opted for thinly veiled racism:
€œI don't know if it's a coincidence but Goma, Domi, Dumas and even Ginola at the end couldn't stick it up here. Maybe that tells us something."
Ironically, this summer Domi backed Newcastle in their attempts to keep hold of key French players, saying the grass isn't always greener, and admitting that he actually did like Newcastle:
"I think everybody enjoys the life in the North East. Honestly, we all love the Quayside and I was living in Jesmond and it is a very nice place."
But then, maybe loving the Quayside was the problem?
