10 Players Who Thought They Were Bigger Than Newcastle United

3. Michael Owen

There are a couple of things that prove that Michael Owen thought a lot of himself during his career at Newcastle: firstly he risked his club career to play for England despite a lack of conditioning and fitness and inevitably paid the price with his exploded knee. Then he decided relegation battles weren't for him so he announced he'd be leaving at the end of his contract - at which point he basically declared himself out of service for all intents and purposes, ghosting through games like he was an empty shirt. That in itself spoke of arrogance. At least he finally admitted he didn't want to stay with the relegated club:
"For a club which went into the Championship it would not have been wise to have me on their books... I think for all parties at the time it was best for me to leave and get off their wage bill. €œHowever, I am not going to say I wanted to stay or I was not offered a contract because that would be lying.€
